Well, I finished work on my diploma thesis two weeks ago. And I have to wait another 6!!! weeks before I get my mark. Waiting is as worse as working 24/7......So, yeah...

Yeah, ooc...(sorry...) Food web stuff, basically. It's about interactions between small crustaceans and microalgae. On the one hand, my kind of crustaceans feed very selectively on a certain type of diatoms. On the other hand, algae are not only dumb and helpless food, they have some pretty neat defence mechanisms affecting the reproduction of their grazers.

Seeweeds can produce toxic or acid chemicals to defend themselves against grazers. Microalgae are single cell individuals so their strategy is focused on defending the whole population. The ones I study produce aldehydes that prevent cell division in copepod eggs when mechanically injured, e. g. by biting. Since it's too late then for the ingested cell, the defence helps the rest of the algae population. Hatching rates for copepod eggs are at 10% during algae blooms and up to 90% after them. Thats why investigations started because you would normally think that the copepod populations grow when their primary food source grows, too...
