Aragorn? *bursts into tears, relieved it wasn't one of the Nazgul. Hopes she didn't hurt him when she smacked him in the face. *

Early the next morning, the party sets out again, riding southeast towards the River Morthond. The lands are as beautiful as ever, though a strange sense of gloom and anxiety seems to cover everything. After midday, they enter a large forest. No birds or other animals can be seen or heard. Nobody speaks but all of them feel the need to ride on as fast as possible. After a while, the forest grows thinner again. Riding up a hill, they can see the river below them. The view is not as far as could be expected on a sunny day like that, the horizon vanishing in some kind of haze. Suddendly a wind from the east rises, bringing the faint smell of smoke. Exchanging brief looks, they ride down to the river, looking for a ford. One of Aragorn's soldiers leads them downstream for about a mile to a place where the river is shallow enough to be crossed. They quickly ride on through the woods again. The smell of smoke grows continually. After a while, the trees thin again. They stop, leaving their horses behind and walk the rest towards the rim of the forest. Hiding behind the trees, they look into a valley with a small river running through it. But what not long ago must have been a beautiful place of piece has turned into a smouldering wasteland. Around the remains of a central village, they count the ruins of six farms. Houses, fields, trees, everything is burned and destroyed. Only one house in the middle of the village seems to be fairly intact. No living being can be seen. After watching the scene in silence, the group starts discussing what to do.

*I'm coming with you.* Joins Jack. They slowly approach the village. Coming nearer, it becomes clear that the intact building is the forge. It's a two storey house with an open workshop and living quarters in the upper floor. She enters the workshop and takes a look around. The fire is still glowing. Scattered over the floor there are remains of Orc chain mail and broken weapons, some in various states of repair. Most of the tools are gone.

*Starts to pull the remains of a barrel, broken swords and other destroyed items aside.* Hey, a trapdoor. There must be a cellar down there.* About to open the door when they hear a groan from upstairs. Draws her sword.* You're right, let's check the upper floor, first.

*has been searching through the ruined dwellings in vain. if anyone has survived or escaped, she hasn't found them. looks at the intact building and, with a last reluctant look at the village, goes in.* oh- why the smith's that survived? *intruiged and not seeing the others as they go upstairs, draws her sword and starts down the trap door.*
